Inhabitat's Week in Green: asteroid mining, a Legoland hotel and the Amsterdam Light Festival

Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week's most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us -- it's the Week in Green.

DNP Inhabitat's Week in Green TKTKTK

Of all the technological breakthroughs we've witnessed in recent years, the emergence of 3D printing technology is one of the most exciting. This week saw a number of breakthroughs in the realm of 3D printing, beginning with Deep Space Industries' plans to develop space-based 3D printers that could produce satellites using materials mined from asteroids. Dutch design firm Universe Architecture announced plans to build the world's first 3D-printed house (which is shaped like a Mobius strip), and French sculptor Gael Langevin is currently developing a design for an open-source humanoid robot that you can make at home with a 3D printer. We learned about an inventive DIYer who figured out a way to hack an old inkjet printer and transform it into a bioprinter. And at Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week on Monday, Iris van Herpen debuted the world's first 3D-printed flexible dresses.

In renewable energy news, this week Inhabitat sent a reporter to Masdar City, which was once billed as the world's first zero-carbon, zero-waste city, to report on some of the new energy-efficient developments there -- including Siemens' new LEED Platinum headquarters and the world's largest concentrated solar power plant. V3solar announced that its spinning cone-shaped photovoltaic cells could produce power at two-thirds the current cost of retail electricity, and a report issued by the World Wildlife Fund found that solar power could serve all the world's energy needs. Belgium announced plans to construct an artificial island to be used solely as storage for wind energy, and Duke Energy recently flipped the switch on what the company claims is the world's largest battery power storage system in West Texas.

In the world of green transportation, Toyota and BMW announced plans to create next-generation car batteries that will generate energy from thin air. At the World Future Energy Summit, students at Osaka Sangyo University rolled out a sporty new emissions-free fuel cell vehicle that's already licensed to drive on the roads in Japan. We also had a chance to check out the Zerotracer, a closed-cabin electric motorbike that recently traveled around the world in 80 days.

In green lighting news, artist Anne Militello recently unveiled her Light Cycles LED art installation, which transforms the 10-story atrium of the World Financial Center in New York City into an impressive glowing light show each night. And speaking of light installations, the entire city of Amsterdam has been aglow with light sculptures, LED decorations, fiery boat parades and huge projections for the Amsterdam Light Festival, which just concluded this week. In Oslo, Squidsoup recently unveiled a new installation featuring 8,064 floating LED lights strung from the ceiling of Galleri ROM. And in San Francisco, the Bay Bridge will soon be adorned with 25,000 individually programmed white LEDs to celebrate the suspension bridge's 75th year.

Lego fans will be excited to hear that North America's first Legoland hotel is set to open its doors in Carlsbad, Calif., in April. In other green architecture news, San Francisco-based firm William Duff Architects recently completed a home in Menlo Park that features a layout based on the Fibonacci sequence. Architecture students in Nantes drafted a proposal to create a floating "hydropolis" that would rest on the tide of Egypt's Nile River. And for a bit of eco eye candy, this week Inhabitat featured Virginia-based artist Eric Standley's mind-blowing paper sculptures, which look like ornate stained-glass windows.

(AP) ? Grammy-winning singer Chris Brown is under investigation for an alleged assault in a West Hollywood parking lot, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said early Monday.

Deputies responding to a report of six men fighting Sunday night found the scene clear, but were told by witnesses there had been a brief fight over a parking space.

"The altercation allegedly led to Chris Brown punching the victim," the department said in a statement released early Monday morning.

The "victim" wasn't identified, but the celebrity website TMZ, which first reported the fight outside the Westlake Recording Studio, said it also involved Frank Ocean, one of the top nominees at the Grammy Awards next month.

In a Twitter posting later, Ocean said he "got jumped by (Brown) and a couple guys" and suffered a finger cut.

It wasn't Brown's first problem in the run-up to the Grammys. His attack on singer Rihanna on the eve of the 2009 awards event overshadowed the show.

Last June, he was injured in a brawl with members of hip-hop star Drake's entourage at a New York nightclub.

No arrests were made. Brown was gone by the time deputies arrived but the department said the investigation is ongoing and Brown would be contacted later.

Email messages to Ocean's publicist and Brown's lawyer and representative were not immediately returned. A man answering the phone at the recording studio declined to comment.

Adele's Father Reveals He Has No Contact With Singer: 'It's Like I'm Dead To Her'

Since he sold a story about her to the press in 2011, Mark Evans has yet to have any contact with his daughter Adele -- and he has a feeling that trend isn't going to end.

In a new interview, Evans admitted to The Daily Mail that he has had no access to Adele or her 3-month-old son and feels like she has completely shut him out of her life.

"It breaks my heart that Adele is so hell-bent on cutting me off like this. I knew she had met her new fella ... but it was a bolt out of the blue when I found out she was expecting," Evans, 49, told The Daily Mail. "As soon as I found out, I wanted more than ever to get in touch and meet up so I could see how she was with my own eyes and let her know I'm here for her."

Adele, 24, has been dating her son's father, Simon Konecki, since January of last year. Still, Evans hasn't had the chance to meet him ... and probably never will.

Evans left Adele's mother Penny when the Grammy-winning singer was three and has not had a good relationship with his daughter since. After he cashed in on the story, Adele dissed her dad, openly admitting she would never speak to him again.

"I was actually ready to start trying to have a relationship with him. He's f**king blown it. He will never hear from me again," Adele told Vogue magazine in Feb. 2012. "There's consequences other than just getting a bit of f**king money that lasts you half a year. It blows my mind. 'I love her so much.' Really? Why are you telling me that through a newspaper? If I ever see him I will spit in his face."

"I'm not interested in her celebrity status or her money, I just want my daughter back and I want to be a proper granddad to the little one," Evans, a Welsh plumber, added to The Daily Mail. "I'm missing out on so many of the joys of being a grandfather. Simple pleasures like taking him out for a walk in his buggy along the promenade at Penarth like I used to with Adele."

Hawaii Elder Law Attorney Suggests Alternative Approach to ...

Question:??"My mother is 91 years old and has Dementia/Alzheimer?s. She does not know how to read or write, but recently she apparently granted Power of Attorney for her finances to my elder sibling. This was done in secrecy and did not take the rest of the family into consideration. Now my sibling has taken over my mother?s house and her bank funds and has placed my mother in a nursing home where she is kept overmedicated.? I?m concerned about how something like this could have happened.? Is there anything I and the rest of my family can do now to have this Legal Directive reversed?"

Answer:??This is a heart-wrenching scenario that is played out in countless families every day across America.? There is a legal approach to the problem that could be expensive, could worsen your current family dynamics, and could take longer than your 91-year-old mother has left.? It would involve securing medical opinions concerning your mother's current capacity to sign legal documents (and, as precisely as they can tell you, when she lost legal capacity), appointment of a legal representative for your mother, and unwinding the asset transfers and other things your sibling has done.? The term used for the legal representative may be guardian or it may be conservator, depending on where you live.? You will need an experienced attorney in your State to guide you through the process and represent you in court.?

Before you go down that road, consider bringing all of your siblings and other interested family members together to talk about what has been done and why.? The answers to those questions may surprise you.? More importantly, the family may find a way to move forward in a unified manner that meets your mother's needs and at the same time preserves (or mends) family harmony.? You may find that a trained mediator can help your family members explain their positions and understand each other's positions.? The mediator could be a pastor, a counselor, a lawyer, or a trusted family member or friend who may or may not fit into any of those categories.? If no one comes to mind, there may be a Neighborhood Justice Center or similar service in your area that can provide mediation services.? This is an alternative worth exploring, and, if it is unsuccessful, it will not prevent you from pursuing the kind of legal approach outlined above.?

How to Professionally Participate in Web Forums to Get More Traffic ...

Web forums are excellent sources of targeted viewers, especially active online communities with sections and discussion pages that are closely relevant to your target niches, site content, products and service offers. Regularly participating in these online communities can improve your bottom-line results.

Imagine knowing a good number of Internet communities where lots of people frequently hang out to learn new things and find solutions to their problems and needs. Now, imagine having a list of Web forums with sections, discussion pages, marketplaces and advertising platforms that are relevant to your site content, products and services. Yes, by spending a couple of hours each day in those Web forums, helping other members with their urgent problems and immediate needs about things that are relevant to your business:

It won?t take long before you establish a good solid reputation in those online communities as a friendly resource of useful info and advice about your niches. At this point, more members and guests will be interested in knowing you more. This means they would most likely check out your profile in those Web forums, go to your Facebook page, click your signature links and end up in your website or blog. However:

You can?t achieve these results if you don?t know how to professionally participate in the relevant discussion pages of those online communities. Here is a step by step guide that can help you do this correctly:

How to Correctly Participate in Web Forums to Get Good Traffic Results

1. Make sure that the Web forum has active sections and discussion pages relevant to your expertise, interests, knowledge, and site content, products and service offers.

2. Carefully read and study the account registration and profile development rules of those Web forums before signing up as a member. Of course, follow these terms and requirements.

3. Before posting in those Web forums, check out their posting rules and guidelines. By doing this, you?ll avoid instances where your posts can get deleted or your account banned from those online communities.

4. Also check out their forum signature linking requirements. Most Web forums don?t allow affiliate links to be posted anywhere.

5. Create catchy statements and phrases for your signature links. It should grab the attention of other members and guests in those Web forums. It should also be enticing and interesting, enough for them to click it and end up in a relevant page of your website or blog.

6. Deliver what your signature statement or phrase promises. This means the pages you link to should be able to provide your target viewers with the benefits they expect to get after clicking your signature links.

7. Find discussions in those online communities that are closely related to your expertise, site content, products and services. Search for threads that talk about possible solutions and useful advice about urgent problems and immediate needs of people who are most likely interested in your niche. Carefully read the entire thread, or the significant sections of those discussion pages, before posting replies. This will ensure that you can be as helpful as you can, instead of writing unrelated info and advice, or worse, repeating things already discussed in detail by other thread participants.

8. Remember; always be as friendly and helpful and professional as you can be in those Web forums. Your main objective is to establish a solid reputation in those online communities as an expert in your niche who always provides value in relevant discussions.

Following the things above will give you the best results you can get from your Web forum marketing campaigns, in terms of driving more targeted traffic to your site and converting that traffic into willing buyers and repeat customers. You should consider offering an updated report with mind-blowing info, advice and benefits for your target viewers. By doing this, you can entice your viewers to sign up as your mailing list subscribers, and by having an active mailing list of people interested in your site content, products and services, you have repeat business in your hands, right in that very list.

Roles Real Estate Agents Play in Bank Foreclosure Real Estate ...

BlankBackground.jpg

When it comes to real estate properties for investment, nothing else can offer much return potential as bank foreclosure real estate. These potential are not only for buyers but also for individuals considering a career as real estate agents. To become an agent, you will need to pass a real estate licensing exam before you began selling any property, even bank foreclosure real estate properties.

Bank foreclosure real estate features properties re-possessed by the banks from owners due to default in mortgage payment. Before a real estate property is considered to be foreclosed, it passes a legal foreclosure proceeding. The moment a single payment is missed, the bank will try to contact the owner to know the reason for such delays. If the owner did not communicate effectively with the bank, then the bank has no choice but to file for a ?Notice of Default?. Depending on the state, the owner will have an average of 30 days to cure mortgage default.

The re-instatement period is also known as the pre-foreclosure stage. Since foreclosure proceeding has not been completed, the property is still in possession of the owner. The owner, in this situation, could choose to sell the property. A pre-foreclosure sale is usually a direct transaction between the owner and the buyer. In cases where the property was listed, a real estate agent will be the one dealing with the buyer in behalf of the owner.

Once the foreclosure proceeding is completed with the owner not being able to cure default during the pre-foreclosure stage, the bank will have to file a ?Notice of Foreclosure?. A foreclosure sale is usually set a week after the notice has been filed. In a foreclosure sale, you will see interested buyers: banks to whom mortgage is owed, private investors and of course real estate brokers and agents. All of these people are there to bid for bank foreclosure real estate. The highest bidder naturally wins the auction.

Some bank foreclosure real estate property survives a foreclosure auction and becomes the possession of the bank that holds the lien. These bank foreclosure real estate properties are no called real estate owned or REO. When the bank?s inventory of REOs or bank foreclosure real estate properties become too big, it will decide to enter into foreclosure listings contract with reputable real estate brokers. These brokers will assign real estate agents to handle these bank foreclosure real estate properties.

From this stage onwards, real estate agents will play a major role until the bank foreclosure real estate property is sold and commission is collected. If you noticed, in all stages of foreclosure, real estate agents are presented with an opportunity to earn. So do not be surprised that more and more people are deciding to shift careers and become real estate agents.

Special tax provisions for members of military

Katie Hanson is a military spouse; her husband, Lt. Cmdr. Marc Hanson, is on active duty in the Navy.

He has Florida as his home of record, even though he is based at Naval Air Station North Island, Coronado, in California. The Hansons never lived in Florida as a married couple. She now lives and works in California, and they own a home in South Carolina that they rent.

So where do they pay taxes?

She has to file a California return and they both have to file in South Carolina. If Florida had a state income tax, he'd have to file there. That's on top of their federal return.

For military personnel, "it's not unusual to have to file taxes in multiple states," said Katie Hanson, project manager for TurboTax's military edition.

That's just one of several tax complexities that military families must deal with when figuring out their taxes.

"Quite often the service members are aware of the benefits but their families are less aware," said Mark Luscombe, principal analyst at CCH, a tax preparation service. "Sometimes problems come up when a service member dies." He said survivors don't always understand the military tax issues.

First off is the question of where the home of record is.

Home of record is where you enter the military, Hanson said. Or it can be the place where you live while in the service that you consider your home. It's where the military will move you back to when you leave the service. Your home of record will determine where you file state income taxes.

There's also the question of what income is taxable.

"The basic pay in the military is taxable but a lot of the secondary stuff is excludable," Luscombe said.

Pay while serving in an officially declared combat zone, for example, is not taxable as income.

"When I was in the Navy in Vietnam, the rule then and still is that you have to have been in the combat zone for at least one day a month to get the exclusion for that month," Luscombe said.

Today, combat zones include Afghanistan, the Persian Gulf region, including Iraq, and the Balkans.

"Service in a combat zone includes any periods you are absent from duty because of sickness, wounds or leaves," says the Internal Revenue Service.

Those who were injured or exposed to diseases in combat zones can, for tax purposes, exclude from income their pay during the time they were hospitalized, even if the hospitalization occurs outside the combat zone. Usual tests pertaining to time and distance for moves do not apply for members of the military.

Service members deployed to combat zones can get an automatic extension for filing their federal tax returns, to 180 days after they return to the United States.

Members of the military also may request to defer payment of income taxes due during their time of service for up to 180 days after that service ends.

They also may include their nontaxable combat pay in their earned income if that would mean a higher earned income tax credit. The amount of the credit, which benefits low- and moderate-income taxpayers, is determined by income and the number of dependents. It is refundable, meaning you will receive it even if you don't owe taxes.

The government will reimburse the moving costs incurred by military personnel relocated to different bases. Anything over and above what the government pays for can be deducted provided it meets the distance requirements. For example, the military will not pay the full cost of shipping a car, Hanson said.

Active-duty military personnel also have more leeway in qualifying for the capital gains exclusion on the sale of their home. Usually to qualify for the exclusion ? up to $250,000 for an individual and $500,000 for a married couple filing jointly ? you have to own and live in the house at least two of the previous five years. For members of the military, the five-year period can be suspended if they are on active duty.

As for uniforms, Hanson said it's a myth that members of the military can deduct their cost. "If you can wear khakis or uniforms off base, you don't even qualify," she said.

But things like battle dress uniforms that cannot be worn when off duty, and insignia of rank or epaulets can be deductible. Still, the cost has to meet the threshold of 2 percent of your income.

The IRS will grant tax forgiveness to members of the military who die "while in active service in a combat zone, from wounds, disease or other injury received in a combat zone or from wounds or injury incurred in a terrorist or military operation."

Because of the complexities of military tax returns, TurboTax has created a special edition of its tax software for servicemen and women and their families. The product was created by former members of the military and military spouses.

The IRS has also has a special publication, Publication 3, for members of the armed forces.

5 Things You Must Do In Torquay, Brixham & Paignton

1. Sample the Local Food

Whether its restaurants in Brixham, pubs in the small town of Churston or caf??s in Torquay, Torbay is full of excellent places to eat. The English Riviera is fast-becoming a hot-spot for independent businesses with a keen focus on local food.? The regions? proximity to the coast means that you?re never far from some superb freshly caught seafood. If this isn?t your thing, fear not, with Devon being such a rural region there are plenty of local producers making everything from real ale to goats cheese.

2. Catch the Steam Train

The Dartmouth Steam Railway is one of South Devon?s most popular visitor attractions. Many visitors to Brixham choose to step back in time and sample the delights of the steam railway. The line starts at Paignton and takes visitors through 7 miles of beautiful South Devon scenery to Kingswear. Many visitors choose to stop off in the beautiful village of Churston Ferrers and join the South West Coast Path or stop for a bite to eat in a Churston pub.

3. Life?s a Beach

If you?re planning a beach holiday in the UK, there?s nowhere better than Torbay. Our region has the highest concentration of Blue Flag beaches in England and with 22 to choose from, you?re spoilt for choice. Whether you?re looking for a secluded spot to sunbathe on a hot summer?s day or a picturesque location for a long winter walk, there?s something for everyone.

For the sandcastle builders, you cannot beat Preston Sands. It has been awarded both blue flag status and a quality coast award so is ideal for a dip in the water. If swimming isn?t your thing, why not hire a colourful beach hut on the picturesque promenade and watch the world go by.

If you?re taking a winter break in Brixham, then perhaps the beautiful Churston Cove would make the perfect location. Dogs are allowed all year round, and this secluded beach is surrounded by sloped woodland and dramatic cliffs making it the ideal location for a winter stroll.

4. Follow Agatha Christie?s Footsteps

The English Riviera is famed for its link to renowned author Agatha Christie. The writer, who published almost 70 crime and detective books and is generally regarded as the bestselling novelist of all time, was born in Torquay. In addition to living here for various periods of her life, she also featured the area in many of her books ? for example Churston Ferrers is featured in the third murder of her story ABC Murders. Even without any prior knowledge of Christie?s work, there?s still plenty sure to fascinate and wow for example her holiday home Greenway House and its 2,700 species of trees and woody plants.

5. Explore the Geopark

A geopark is an area of outstanding geological, ecological and cultural interest. At first glance, the crowded shores of The English Riviera would seem an unlikely scene to create a Geopark, yet the immediate area has a rich and well-exposed geological heritage, from Devonian reefs to Pleistocene bone-caves. The English Riviera is the only Geopark worldwide to include urban areas and there?s plenty to discover from underground caverns to historic abbeys. Why not make the most of all there is to see by staying in one of South Devon?s many excellent hotels.

NOM Slams Obama's Call For LGBT Equality, Says Gays 'Already Treated Equally'

In the wake of President Barack Obama's precedent-setting call for LGBT equality Monday, anti-gay groups have been quick to dismiss the administration's apparent support for marriage equality.

As the New York Times notes, Obama became the first president ever to use the word "gay" during an inauguration speech, saying that "our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law.'"

On Monday, Brian Brown, president of the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), jumped on the president's statement in a response posted to the group's blog. In it, he argued that gay and lesbian Americans already have the same rights as heterosexual Americans.

"Gay and lesbian people are already treated equally under the law," Brown said. "They have the same civil rights as anyone else; they have the right to live as they wish and love whom they choose. What they don?t have is the right to redefine marriage for all of society."

Brown went on to criticize Obama for voicing "support for a radical agenda advanced by some of his biggest campaign contributors to redefine marriage for everyone."

A representative for the Family Research Council, another anti-gay group, echoed Brown's sentiments during an interview with CNN host Soledad O?Brien on Tuesday morning.

Senior fellow Peter Sprigg told O'Brien that he objected to the president's juxtaposition of the 1969 Stonewall Inn riot -- a watershed moment for gay rights -- with similar moments from the women's rights and Civil Rights movements.

"We as social conservatives do not agree with the president?s attempt to link the modern homosexual movement with the women?s rights movement or the civil rights movement for African Americans,? Sprigg said. ?The irony is that homosexuals already have all the same civil rights as anyone else.?

Sprigg continued to say that "all sexual behavior" is not created equal, nor do "all personal relationships have an equal value to society at large, that serve the same public interests."

As ThinkProgress notes, LGBT Americans in many states do not have the same kinds of workplace discrimination protections as straight employees. According to the Human Right Council, workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation is legal in 29 states; discrimination based on gender identity or expression is legal in 34 states.

In addition, the majority of states do not recognize same-sex marriages, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

US home sales rose to 5-year high in 2012

(AP) ? U.S. sales of previously occupied homes rose in 2012 to their highest level in five years, spurred higher by record-low mortgage rates and steady hiring.

The National Association of Realtors said Tuesday that sales reached 4.65 million last year. That's up 9.2 percent from 2011 and the most since 2007. Sales are still below the roughly 5.5 million that are consistent with a healthy market.

Sales dipped in December to a pace of 4.94 million, down from 4.99 million in November. November's figure was revised lower, but was still the highest in three years.

The supply of available homes is shrinking as sales rise. That's pushing up prices. The inventory of homes for sale dropped to 1.82 million in December, the lowest in 12 years.

Still, the housing market is recovering and most analysts expect that should continue this year.

Steady hiring, record-low mortgage rates and a tight supply of new and previously occupied homes available for sale have helped boost sales and prices in most markets.

A measure of U.S. home prices rose 7.4 percent annually in November, real estate data provider CoreLogic said last week. That's the biggest annual increase since 2006, when the housing bubble began to burst. CoreLogic forecasts that home prices will rise 6 percent nationally this year.

Rising demand for homes has persuaded builders to step up construction, which adds to economic growth and hiring.

U.S. builders started work on homes in December at the fastest pace in 4 ? years, the government said last week. And builders finished 2012 as their best year for residential construction since the early stages of the housing crisis.

The gains in home building helped boost construction hiring in December by 30,000 jobs ? the most in 15 months.

Latinos take on more prominent role in Obama inauguration

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Latinos are taking a more prominent role in President Barack Obama's second inauguration, from the first Hispanic Supreme Court justice swearing in the vice president to a star-studded concert celebrating Latino culture.

Eva Longoria, a co-chairwoman for Obama's campaign, hosted "Latino Inaugural 2013: In Performance at the Kennedy Center" as a salute to the president Sunday evening ahead of his public swearing-in Monday. Jose Feliciano, Chita Rivera, Rita Moreno and Latin pop star Prince Royce all performed. The lineup also included Mario Lopez and Wilmer Valderrama.

Vice President Joe Biden and his family appeared onstage, drawing big cheers, to help open the show. He said he wanted to thank Latinos for their support in last year's election.

Biden said something profound happened with the enormous Latino support for Obama, and he said the Latino community underestimates its power.

"One thing that happened in this election, you spoke. You spoke in a way that the world, and I mean the world, as well as the United States, could not fail to hear," Biden said, calling the Latino vote decisive. "This is your moment. America owes you."

Feliciano opened the show by singing the national anthem.

Marc Anthony later drew big cheers when he applauded Latinos' growing political influence.

"Our united voice got us all here tonight and got the best man for the job in the White House," Anthony said.

San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro, who gave the keynote speech at last year's Democratic National Convention, recalled the admiration Latinos held for another president more than 50 years ago. Portraits of President John F. Kennedy still hang in many homes, he said.

"As we said 'Viva Kennedy' 50 years ago, today we say 'Viva Obama,'" Castro said.

A children's choir from San Juan, Puerto Rico, closed out the show, singing "This Land is Your Land." They were joined by a larger Latino choir, including Hispanic members of the U.S. military, in singing "America the Beautiful."

Earlier Sunday, Justice Sonia Sotomayor, an Obama appointee who is the first Hispanic justice on the highest court, administered the oath of office to Biden. And Richard Blanco, a son of Cuban exiles, is Obama's inauguration poet.

Latinos have a distinct presence at this inauguration after raising funds and turning out the vote for Obama in the 2012 election. Hispanics voted 7 to 1 for Obama over his challenger, Republican Mitt Romney, whose Hispanic support was less than any other presidential candidate in 16 years. Analysts said Romney's hardline stance on immigration was a factor.

San Antonio philanthropist and business leader Henry Munoz III, who coordinated the Latino inauguration event with Longoria and other Obama supporters, said this is a special moment when the Latino community is positioned to take an expanded role in shaping the country's future.

"Without question, the presidential election of 2012 proves that Latinos are perhaps the most important influence from this point forward in the election of the president of the United States," Munoz said. "It's important that the leadership in Washington view us not as a narrow interest group but as a vibrant political force" that carries not just votes, but influence and financial resources.

Organizers planned a series of symposiums, dinners and events ahead of the inauguration to keep people talking about issues that matter to Latinos, from immigration reform to building a Latino history museum on the National Mall. Munoz led a presidential commission that called on Congress in 2011 to authorize such a museum within the Smithsonian Institution, but Congress has not yet passed such a bill.

Munoz said it's important to keep Latinos engaged through the inauguration and beyond.

"Our work is not done. It doesn't end," he said. "We have a tendency to look at this phenomenon as ending on Election Day, when the reality is now it's time to get to work."

Longoria said this is her first inauguration. She has taken on a new role as political advocate since her days on "Desperate Housewives," pushing for a Latino history museum in Washington and raising funds for Obama's re-election.

Even though this is Obama's second inauguration, Longoria said there is still much to celebrate, including Sotomayor's role swearing in the vice president.

"There's something special about seeing a president recommit himself to the people of this great nation," she said before the show.

Longoria said she hopes to help influence policies, including immigration reform, and hopes Obama will make that his top priority as an economic issue. She called the Latino fundraising effort for the president a historic turning point.

"I think we have a permanent seat at the table, and now we're going to be able to have influence on what affects our communities," Longoria said. "I take civic responsibility very seriously, and I want to do what I can to help my country."

Cancer cells are resourceful survivors with plenty of tricks for staying alive. Researchers have uncovered one of these stratagems, showing how cells lacking the tumor suppressor BRCA1 can resume one form of DNA repair, sparing themselves from stagnation or death. The study appears in the January 21st issue of The Journal of Cell Biology.

The BRCA1 protein helps to mend double-strand DNA breaks by promoting homologous recombination. Without it, cells can amass broken, jumbled, and fused chromosomes, which may cause them to stop growing or die. Although cells lacking BRCA1 seem like they should be vulnerable, loss of the protein instead seems to boost abnormal growth.

Recent studies have shown that cells lacking BRCA1 compensate by cutting back on 53BP1. This protein helps orchestrate a different DNA repair mechanism, nonhomologous end joining (NHEJ), and it thwarts a key step in homologous recombination. Researchers think that, in cells without BRCA1, 53BP1 spurs excessive NHEJ that can cause fatal chromosomal chaos. But with 53BP1 out of the way, the cells are able to resume homologous recombination. That might explain why cells that lack BRCA1 and eliminate 53BP1 can withstand traditional chemotherapy compounds and PARP inhibitors, a new generation of anti-cancer drugs that are in clinical trials. But how do cancer cells turn down 53BP1?

Researchers previously found that certain mutant fibroblasts increase production of cathepsin L, a protease that destroys 53BP1. BRCA1-deficient cancer cells take advantage of the same mechanism, according to a team of researchers led by Susana Gonzalo from the Washington University School of Medicine. When they cultured breast cancer cells that were missing BRCA1, the cells stopped growing. After two weeks of lethargy, however, some cells, which the researchers dubbed BOGA cells (BRCA1-deficient cells that overcome growth arrest), began to divide again. These cells showed increased levels of cathepsin L and reduced amounts of 53BP1. Eliminating cathepsin L from BOGA cells or dosing them with vitamin D, a cathepsin L inhibitor, prevented the decline in 53BP1 abundance.

To find out whether boosting cathepsin L levels enabled the cancer cells to restart homologous recombination, the researchers monitored sites of DNA damage tagged by RAD51, a protein that helps promote homologous recombination. The cells that had stopped growing did not display RAD51 foci, but these foci were prevalent in BOGA cells with reduced 53BP1. Removing cathepsin L from BOGA cells increased 53BP1 levels and diminished the number of RAD51 foci.

If cells can't perform homologous recombination, they turn to repair mechanisms such as NHEJ that can lead to jumbled chromosomes. However, after DNA-breaking doses of radiation, BOGA cells exhibited few chromosome defects. The number of these flaws climbed after the researchers stabilized 53BP1 levels by inhibiting cathepsin L or trimming its abundance.

The team then analyzed tumor samples from breast cancer patients. Researchers suspect that cathepsin L attacks 53BP1 by entering the nucleus. Samples from patients with BRCA1 mutations or with triple-negative breast canceran aggressive form of the diseaseshowed high levels of nuclear cathepsin L and reduced quantities of 53BP1. That suggests tumors in these patients hike the amounts of cathepsin L in the nucleus to break down 53BP1 and restore homologous recombination.

"It's a new pathway that explains how breast cancer cells lose 53BP1," says Gonzalo. How cancer cells boost nuclear cathepsin L levels is unclear, she notes.

Triple-negative breast cancers are currently identified by their lack of Her2 and the estrogen and progesterone receptors. The work suggests that another trio of measurementsthe amounts of 53BP1, cathepsin L, and vitamin D receptor in the nucleusmight help identify patients that are resistant to current breast cancer treatments. These people might respond to cathepsin inhibitors, some of which are undergoing animal testing. These compounds might steer the cells away from homologous recombination and leave them vulnerable to other therapies.

Obama girls to hit teen milestones in White House

(AP) ? That's how it goes with kids. You hardly notice how fast they're growing up, then suddenly big sis is nearly as tall as Mom and the little one is a tween, gently sassing Dad.

On the inaugural platform again four years later, a more mature Malia Obama, 14, and Sasha, 11, smiled, sometimes giggled, and chatted with their cousin Avery Robinson as they awaited their father's arrival. Sasha bounced on her feet a bit as if chilly; later at the parade she danced in her seat to the beat of passing drummers. Malia, rivaling her mother's 5 feet 11 inches, looked poised in calf-high black boots. Like any girls their age, they whipped out their smartphones in the reviewing stand to take photos.

Both daughters appeared relaxed and oblivious to their global TV audience, unaffected by their rare status, unfazed by the fuss over their father.

Meanwhile, fashion-watchers were tweeting about the girls' coats in vibrant shades of purple. For the record: Malia wore a J. Crew ensemble, Sasha's was Kate Spade, and first lady Michelle Obama was in a Thom Browne coat with a navy print like a man's silk tie.

Such attention to the Obamas' clothes, their Hawaiian vacations, their hair ? Michelle lit up Twitter last week by adding bangs ? will continue as they charge into a time of turbulence for so many American families: the teen years.

In the second term Sasha, who arrived in the White House as a second-grader, moves on to high school. She expressed her pre-teen spirit Sunday, when Barack Obama took his official, nonpublic oath of office. After giving Dad a "Good job!" she added a reminder of his flubbed words four years ago. "You didn't mess up," Sasha teased the commander in chief.

For Malia, the milestones to come are many ? she'll be hitting the years when typical teens start driving, dating and applying to colleges. How normally can any of this go at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.?

Life in the White House is bound to feel different to a teen than it does to a second-grader.

Seven-year-old Emanuel Coleman's grandmother positioned him on the steps of the National Gallery of Art to watch the swearing-in on a giant outdoor screen Monday. The Durham, N.C., boy thought life for a White House kid must be cool, because the president has "his own private limo, helicopter and lives in a really big house."

"It would be fun to fly in the presidential helicopter," Emanuel enthused.

Sixteen-year-old Colleen Casey isn't so sure.

"They have to live their life in their dad's shadow," said Casey, part of a group of Girl Scout volunteers who came to the inaugural from nearby Woodbridge, Va. "You can't be your own person."

That's the struggle for White House youngsters, said author Doug Wead, who has interviewed 19 sons and daughters of former presidents and wrote about them in "All the Presidents' Children."

"When your mom's the first lady, and all your classmates are oohing and ahhing over her, it's hard to compete with that," Wead said. "At any given time, half the country hates your father and half the country loves him. It's hard to establish a separate identity."

Just last week, the National Rifle Association referred to the Obama daughters in an ad berating their father for opposing a proposal to put armed guards in all schools, while his children get Secret Service protection. And the president's been criticized for sending Sasha and Malia to the private Sidwell Friends School.

Even the great stuff ? traveling the globe, meeting rock stars, mingling with world leaders ? can go to a girl's head.

Mrs. Obama says she strives to give the girls a normal life ? homecoming dances, playing basketball, trick-or-treating, slumber parties ? and also to keep them respectful, responsible and down-to-earth.

There's been lots of speculation that Mrs. Obama, who turns 50 next year, may design her own transformation in the second term, when she'll be freed from worries about her husband's re-election. Will the first lady who dubbed herself "mom-in-chief" add to her portfolio of family-centered causes? The White House isn't yet saying.

Some feminists want to see the Harvard Law School grad take on a more forceful public role. Not all her fans are so sure.

"I like the roles she's taken on with troops, with health, with children," said W. Faye Butts, 68, an enthusiastic Obama supporter who traveled from Macon, Ga., for the inaugural. No need to try to do more: "She has a family to raise, that's her first priority."

Loans Against Equipment In Construction Are Booming

?

VMI LLC, a nationwide asset-based funding source that provides flexible loan solutions for businesses with heavy equipment that is pledged as collateral, has just announced that it generated over $5 million in approvals during 2012. The final two quarters were especially strong for the company, which offers working capital loans as well as other loan services to its clients.

As the construction industry continues to gain strength, VMI LLC is anticipating an even larger year in 2013.

?We are incredibly optimistic about this upcoming year as traditional lenders aren?t lending but we are,? said Skylar Marshall, Communications Specialist from the equipment loan company, adding that since the loans are not credit-based, the staff at VMI LLC can work with clients whose credit scores are low.

?Traditional lenders have abandoned the commercial construction industry, but we are ready to provide construction companies with the working capital they need.?

As noted on the company?s website, one of the main reasons why businesses fail is due to undercapitalization. By working with VMI LLC and securing a loan against equipment, companies can get much-needed funding. Through the company?s construction equipment financing program, businesses can often secure equipment loans ranging from $10,000 up to $250,000. The company offers its equipment sale leaseback program to a variety of industries, including excavation, grading, demolition, paving, wrecking, hauling, and many more.

VMI LLC will typically finance heavy equipment of all varieties, including tractors, loaders, graders, excavators, cranes, and dump trucks. These often include well-known brands like Caterpillar, John Deere, Case, Komatsu, Hitachi, Kenworth and Peterbilt.

There are two main benefits to arranging for this type of business loan. First, by refinancing construction equipment, the business gets an inflow of cash that can be used for any business purpose they wish, including working capital, purchasing supplies, paying subcontractors or starting and completing projects.

Also, with the type of construction equipment refinance that is offered by VMI LLC, the equipment stays with the business so their projects can still be completed on time. There is no transfer of the equipment so there is no disturbance with the business, which is good news for both the company and its clients.

About VMI LLC:

VMI LLC provides secured construction equipment financing for companies that need working capital. Construction equipment funding is available for tractors, excavators, bulldozers, loaders, graders, scrapers, dump trucks, cranes, forklifts, backhoes, steers and other heavy equipment. Working capital loans are approved based on the equipment, not credit. For more information, please visit http://www.financeheavyequipment.com

?The Yen Is Doomed?: For Japan, This Time Really ... - Yahoo! Finance

Despite all the talk about the U.S. fiscal cliff and debt ceiling, developments in Japan are shaping up to be 2013's biggest story for financial markets.

The yen has now fallen over 13% vs. the greenback since mid-November and traded below 90 to the dollar on Friday -- the first time since mid-2010. Shares of Japanese multinationals such as Toyota (TM) and Sony (SNE) have surged in reaction as a weaker yen makes them more competitive vs. their global competitors.

The yen?s weakness is a direct result of the campaign promises and policies of new Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who won a landslide election in December.

Related: 'Obscene' Stimulus Will Trigger 'Made in Japan' Crisis in 2013: Mauldin

Thanks to a strong majority in Japan?s parliament and the pending retirement of three top Bank of Japan executives, Abe has a great opportunity -- and the political capital -- to live up to his promise to reinvigorate Japan?s economy by weakening the yen and embark on a massive stimulus program, according to Axel Merk, president of Merk Investments and manager of the Merk Funds, which has about $650 million of assets under management.

?The Japanese are known to talk, not act: That?s going to change,? Merk says.

Related: 2013 Could be the Year Japan?s Economy Turns Around: Cumberland?s Witherell

The yen has become known as the ?widow maker? for its historic propensity to punish those who?ve tried to short it. Similar to the dollar, the yen has enjoyed "safe haven" status during times of crisis. Repeatedly proven reports of its demise have been premature. But Merk believes this time really is different.

?The yen is doomed,? he says. ?We think the yen is going to drop substantially this year [and] eventually is going to be worthless.?

?Worthless? seems a bit hyperbolic and overly emotional. But Merk?s 2013 outlook piece cites the following fundamentals to support his forecast of continued weakness in the yen:

  • Abe?s government will appoint the three top positions at the Bank of Japan, as the governor and both deputy governors retire. Recent appointees have already been more dovish. Japanese culture is said to prefer talk over action, but the time for dovish talk may finally be over.
  • Despite its dovish reputation, the Bank of Japan barely expanded its balance sheet since 2008; of the major central banks only the Reserve Bank of Australia has been more hawkish.
  • Japan?s current account is sliding toward a deficit. That means, deficits will start to matter, eventually pushing up the cost of borrowing and making a 200%+ debt-to-GDP ratio unsustainable. (As you'll see in the accompanying video, Merk is quite animated on the subject of Japan's deteriorating current account deficit and views it as key to a bearish view on the yen.)
  • Abe?s government is as determined as it is blind. Abe believes a major spending program is just what Japan needs. As far as the yen is concerned, Abe may be getting far more than he is bargaining for.

Related: Japan?s Monetary Policies Are Disastrous for U.S. Economy: Peter Schiff

?The good news is we don?t think there?s a European crisis,? he says. ?There?s a shifting global crisis and it?s shifting from the U.S. to Europe to Japan.?

Regular viewers may see a pattern here. As you can see in the "related" links here, several guests have been spinning a variation of the same story in recent weeks: The yen is going to keep getting weaker and Abe?s government ? along with global markets ? should be careful what they wish for.

How Berwyn Back Pain Relief Is Done Naturally Through ...

To successfully dispose of various types of pains that affect the body is the biggest concern of the Berwyn chiropractor. He is well skilled on ways to bring about relief to sufferers of pain using an unorthodox medical care called chiropractic. Backache is major among the numerous ailments which are brought to his office every day.

So many people suffer from back ache. As a matter of fact, it is common in all spheres of life. It is due to common factors such as stress, fatigue, poor posture and carrying very heavy objects. It begins as a slight pain, but if left unattended for long, it could result in excruciating pain levels that can even affect the ability to perform everyday normal activities.

As soon as aches are noticed in the back region, proper arrangement must be made to eradicate it. A chiropractic center could be visited in order to get the attention of the doctor. Other options may be sought also.

Back soreness starts off from the spinal cord which actually is the mid-point of every human musculoskeletal network. Pains result when some spine bones shift out of their standard position. This action causes tension to build up in the tendons, muscles, and nerves since the troubled bones exert a lot of pressure on the entire back region.

Quite a lot of persons carry on with work for hours unending without taking time out to rest in between. This is very harmful to general wellness because it leads to accumulation of stress. Body muscles begin to get stiffened and tired due to this and back pain is produced.

Chiropractic has several therapies for alleviating backache. These include laser therapy, spinal decompression, and sactive release. Another very effective therapy is massage. All these are natural techniques that completely take care of back pain. Besides these, health tips like resting properly, eating well, and exercising regularly are encouraged and taught by the Berwyn chiropractor.
