2. Catch the Steam Train
The Dartmouth Steam Railway is one of South Devon?s most popular visitor attractions. Many visitors to Brixham choose to step back in time and sample the delights of the steam railway. The line starts at Paignton and takes visitors through 7 miles of beautiful South Devon scenery to Kingswear. Many visitors choose to stop off in the beautiful village of Churston Ferrers and join the South West Coast Path or stop for a bite to eat in a Churston pub.
3. Life?s a Beach
If you?re planning a beach holiday in the UK, there?s nowhere better than Torbay. Our region has the highest concentration of Blue Flag beaches in England and with 22 to choose from, you?re spoilt for choice. Whether you?re looking for a secluded spot to sunbathe on a hot summer?s day or a picturesque location for a long winter walk, there?s something for everyone.
For the sandcastle builders, you cannot beat Preston Sands. It has been awarded both blue flag status and a quality coast award so is ideal for a dip in the water. If swimming isn?t your thing, why not hire a colourful beach hut on the picturesque promenade and watch the world go by.
If you?re taking a winter break in Brixham, then perhaps the beautiful Churston Cove would make the perfect location. Dogs are allowed all year round, and this secluded beach is surrounded by sloped woodland and dramatic cliffs making it the ideal location for a winter stroll.
4. Follow Agatha Christie?s Footsteps
The English Riviera is famed for its link to renowned author Agatha Christie. The writer, who published almost 70 crime and detective books and is generally regarded as the bestselling novelist of all time, was born in Torquay. In addition to living here for various periods of her life, she also featured the area in many of her books ? for example Churston Ferrers is featured in the third murder of her story ABC Murders. Even without any prior knowledge of Christie?s work, there?s still plenty sure to fascinate and wow for example her holiday home Greenway House and its 2,700 species of trees and woody plants.
5. Explore the Geopark
A geopark is an area of outstanding geological, ecological and cultural interest. At first glance, the crowded shores of The English Riviera would seem an unlikely scene to create a Geopark, yet the immediate area has a rich and well-exposed geological heritage, from Devonian reefs to Pleistocene bone-caves. The English Riviera is the only Geopark worldwide to include urban areas and there?s plenty to discover from underground caverns to historic abbeys. Why not make the most of all there is to see by staying in one of South Devon?s many excellent hotels.
